The owners wished to expand the existing hotel to accommodate an additional 70 guest bedrooms and provide a new entrance and reception for visitors. Situated on the A45 Coventry Road and within close proximity to the NEC and Birmingham Airport meant it was well placed to benefit from an increase in activity and visitors to the area. From the outset the Practice worked on a design to provide a dramatic new three storey high entrance with a pair of well organised bedroom blocks extending from the new foyer at the knuckle. By the use of a restrained contemporary architecture a new vision of the hotel was created which masks the original 1960s building.
The scheme was delivered using a traditional JCT contract, however the form of construction embraced an innovative combination of steel framed open plan areas with modular bedroom pods, thus both reducing construction times and improving the quality of the finished product.
