ACT UK incorporates training and research facilities for the construction industry. At its core is the BMSC (Building Management Simulation Centre) the first in the UK, providing a virtual building site for training construction managers. Initially Robothams were appointed to prepare a design study for the Learning Skills Council after which a detailed scheme was developed and tested through a value management process. The design is conceived as a series of discrete elements connected by a dramatic two storey atrium, providing conference areas, workspace, breakout areas and the simulation hall.
To meet best practice for construction projects a partnering approach was adopted for procurement with the contractor advising the project team during the detailed design phase and the project being let under a traditional contract. The building is steel framed with pre-cast concrete floors. A variety of external cladding materials provide a teaching tool for those visiting the building. Site cabins are built in the simulation hall for purposes of realism.
