The site lies within the Railway Conservation Area of Derby that runs along the frontage of Carrington Street and the Midland Road, including the Victorian Midland Railway Headquarters. The design was conceived to optimize the potential of the existing historic building; creating sufficient development to support the additional costs of its renovation. The 5 storey, steel framed, modern extension makes a clear break from the architectural style of the original building while creating a strong focal point at the corner of the two roads.
All 53 affordable units were developed to comply with the Housing Corporation Scheme Development Standards and have also been designed so that 5% of the apartments can be converted to lifetime living units. The scheme was constructed by local contractor Lindum with Robothams employed to develop the detailed design and support their work on site.
