Robothams were initially commissioned to design and assist the client with a successful application to the SFA to obtain funding for the refurbishment of the main six storey buildings at Leamington Spa campus. The scheme has developed to include the provision of a new arrival foyer and atrium linking the lower floors of the main buildings forming the shop front for the college and projecting an innovative image. The main buildings becoming flexible learning environments providing high quality vocational and academic opportunities.
The refurbishment has been undertaken in a phased approach to allow the building to remain occupied throughout the project. Works have been on site since June 2012 with completion in April 2015.
The new entrance foyer forms a pedestrian artery to all the adjoining buildings. Arrival will be into a double height space affording open views to student services, college shop, catering and hair and beauty and incorporating main reception, meeting rooms and enterprise zones. New vertical circulation will be provided to afford easy access to upper levels.
The internal layout is designed to be open plan, light and airy, allowing flexibility and incorporating timber clad cylindrical furniture pods which can be used for meetings, informal study and social activities.
The existing buildings are being completely overhauled, including asbestos removal, and reclad with a thermally efficient rain screen façade to reduce running costs and present a new flagship building. The elevations incorporate vertical aerofoil solar shading to reduce glare and create a comfortable teaching environment.
