South Building

City College Coventry, Swanswell, Coventry

Phase 2 or the South Building of the College’s campus provided the remainder of its teaching facilities including art, design, hairdressing, humanities and performing arts in addition to core administrative and student support functions.  The performing arts facilities included two studio theatres and associated back of house areas as well as a specific dance studio.  Working within the context of the ‘Learning Quarter’ master plan, South Building completes the second edge of the new public space.  The design context fully embraces the College’s key values through an investment in providing the highest quality learning environment for both staff and students.

As a showcase centre for advanced construction technology, matters of sustainability are central to the design the design, particularly with regard to exceeding the latest thermal regulations and improving energy conservation during the building’s occupation.  The College had committed to the philosophy of a ‘partnering’ procurement route in conjunction with the NEC form of contract for phase 1 and continued this approach into this second phase.
